Chinese Nutria Fur is Similar to muskrat but darker with longer guard hairs. Characterized by dense grayish underfur (very soft and plush) and long glossy guard hairs. The long guard hairs make tail whisks and the fur on the skin can be used for zonker strips. Underfur makes good dubbing for all types of fly.

The fur on these patches have the properties fly tyers expect: the under-fur is dense, is fine and fairly short, and the guard hairs are thicker, stiffer and longer. Cut a clump at the skin and pull out the guard. With a little rubbing the under fur quickly makes a fine, textured dubbing. From the natural-coloured patch the under fur is a rich grey-brown. It spins easily and dubs a small dry fly rather well.
